When you go to watch a football game, you expect touchdowns and exciting plays; however, that wouldn’t happen without some major key factors, one in particular.

Senior lineman/linebacker Cooper Lovrich may not be scoring three touchdowns and running for 100 yards per game, but he is a main component in why those stats are able to happen for the Bellwood-Antis football team.

“Cooper is one of the most dedicated players we have on this team,” Coach Nick Lovrich said. “His hard work over the summer has shown in every game we have had, and I am really proud of him.”

So far this year, the Blue Devils have ran for 730 yards, with Alex McCartney putting up 484 of those yards and Chase Plummer putting up 248. None of that would be possible without the offensive linemen, especially Cooper Lovrich. On the defensive side, his role as a middle linebacker makes him a key leader, helping set the defense up and stop the runs from opposing teams.

Cooper says that the beginning of the season has been strong, but there is still a lot of room to grow for the 2-2 Blue Devils.

“This season has been pretty good so far, but there is definitely a lot of room for improvement on both sides of the ball,” he said. “We do have a lot of potential for the rest of the season.”

This year, Lovrich has taken on more of a role on the defensive end.

“I have more involvement on defense. I have to adapt by studying plays and formations, along with studying more film,” Cooper added.

As he starts his senior year, he has contributed greatly to the team and their success. He already has 25 tackles, which is on course to tying and/or beating his numbers from previous years.

The potential for the rest of the season matches what the team’s goals are and what they always have been every season. “We want to win the District 6 Championship and compete for a state title,” said Cooper.

With his dedication, leadership, and willingness to adapt, Cooper Lovrich continues to be a key asset to the Bellwood-Antis football team, and for that reason, he is our Athlete of the Week.

Lovrich and the football team travel to Gray-Veterans Memorial Field to take on the Tyrone Golden Eagles in their 87th meeting of the Backyard Brawl on Friday at 7 p.m.
