The Blue Devils prowled over Forest Hills last Friday 45-27, bringing their record to 6-4 to end the regular season. This week they advance to the District 6 2A playoffs as a 6 seed to match up with 3-seeded River Valley.
This is a rematch from last year’s playoff game where Bellwood beat the Panthers43-14. River Valley this season stands at 9-1.
Last week, Bellwood turned on the burners in the second half against the Rangers, scoring 36 points. Running back Alex McCartney ran for 165 yards and 3 touchdowns giving him a second 1,000 yard season. Chase Plummer ran for 159 yards and 3 touchdowns, averaging 11.4 yards per carry.
The running back duo scored 42 points for the Blue Devils.
The victory was the third in a row for the Devils, who say they are ready for this year’s playoffs.
”We are glad to have another opportunity to get back in the playoffs to accomplish our goal that we did not complete last year,” junior Jeffery Waite said.
River Valley they blew out Northern Cambria 38-14 last week. Quarterback Max Persichetti threw 10 completions for 170 yards along with 2 touchdowns. Their running game was just as good, with 244 yards with 3 touchdowns. Brody Hutter did the damage with 141 yards, including a 60 yard run.
River Valley’s defense in each of the past 6 weeks has held teams to only two touchdowns or lower.
The Panthers only loss this season was to Cambria Heights 35-7.
The Blue Devils passing game has been working the pass few weeks, creating big plays and touchdowns. Bradyn Partner has thrown for 664 yards and 5 touchdowns.
But the bread and butter for B-A has been its running game, which has produced 1,960 rushing yards.
“We’re just sticking to what we do best, which is wearing down defenses with the run and executing at it is what keeps us consistent and dominant,” McCartney said.
River valley is also a run-heavy team, with 2,370 yards and 33 touchdowns. Running backs Jake Woodring and Hutter have combined for 1,462 yards and 20 touchdowns.
Their passing game is capable and provides balance, with 728 yards for 10 touchdowns.
The winner will advance to play the winner of No. 2 Richland and No. 7 United Valley.
